Really enjoyed your insights, Robert. This reminds me of the "45 MPH Illusion"—the kinetic reality that distinctiveness goes bankrupt at speed.

You have perfectly described the transition from the "Algorithm of Flow" to the "Physics of Place". As you noted, the modern landscape is designed to eliminate friction, making the journey smooth but unmemorable. That "brief journey" from the parking spot you mention is what we call the "Asphalt Moat"—a defensive perimeter that signals the car is the guest and the human is the intruder.

Your experience proves the rule: Efficiency is the enemy of affection. You can use a city at 45 MPH, but you can only love it at 3 MPH.

Many streets in the U.S. are inhumane and even anti-human. I discovered this when I began living car free. The entire traffic engineering profession needs to be rethought from the ground up.
